The Envelope

the envelope, originally uploaded by danhernandez.

The Envelope, my only clue besides the shoebox the negatives i arrived in as to who these people are. As I say in my blogs description the envelope is labled with the name Anne Michels and the photo devloper is in Oregon City, which is part of Clackamas county. If i had to guess the date of these photos I would suspect that the majority were from between the 1910's and the 1920's.

When i scanned this, I thought that was a pail she was holding, but I was wrong first it seems to be a he, and second that looks more like a spade to me.

Man by doorway

manbydoorway, originally uploaded by danhernandez.

Who is this guy? Was he a helpful local or a next door neighbor, a family member? Was this a vacation photo or was it taken down the street from the photographer's house.

I love how off center all these photos are they create these great tension filled photos. you don't get these kinda of qualities in photos taken with digital cameras. They seem more authentic because of there flaws. Typical digital images tend to be very centered and generic because of the handy viewscreen.

I had to do a little extra in photoshop to get the tones a little more even and readable, some parts of this photo where too dark and some where too bright. Its hard to resist the urge to just spend hours cleaning up some of these negatives some are really dirty. But I'm really not all that talented at photoshop cleanup. I've actually been thinking of releasing zip up packages of the untouched negatives to see if other people feel like.

Bathing Suit Girl

Bathing Suit Girl, originally uploaded by danhernandez.

I uploaded two photos today because I forgot to upload one last night as I was having fun on my birthday.

So I've already started to develop a bad habit of misnaming these pictures. In the file names on my computer I have this one named as bathing suit boy. Mainly this is because while I'm scanning these all i really have to go on is the negative image so I need to guess as to the gender of the child and so far I've been wrong on a few of the negatives I've scanned so far.

Women on Horseback

Women on Horseback, originally uploaded by danhernandez.

The negative for this photo was pretty warped and dirty. but it's very iconic, I seem to be having some luck grabbing beautiful images from the Box.

I'm curious whether the Box has anymore of these pictures of this ranch

girlhouse

girlhouse, originally uploaded by danhernandez.

I love how this photo is just slightly off kilter. it makes for a great composition.

From the expression of the little girl I almost want to think that maybe the photographer was laughing along with her and skewed the photo,

ZenithWagon

ZenithWagon, originally uploaded by danhernandez.

So these are photos of somebody's family.

I purchased a box of negatives from a Goodwill in Hillsboro, Oregon. The only indication of who this family might be is the name, Anna Michels written on the envelope for the original prints.

I don't know what this blog will become and I've only got a vague idea of the photos that I've got. But I do think this will be an interesting process.

I hope you enjoy them.
